COPPA Compliance

Although Anthrofiction Network is not aimed at preteens or younger, it is a family-friendly site and some of the content may attract children. Because of this I must ask everyone to truthfully enter their birthdate when registering.

I do not wish to exclude anyone based on age, but US federal law prohibits me from accepting account registration from anyone under 13 years of age—except by permission of their parent or legal guardian. Unfortunately, I do not have a toll-free number at this time. I will accept collect calls from within the USA if you tell the operator to mention COPPA.

Information for Parents

The following information is required from all our members.

  • A valid e-mail address: This could be your’s or your child’s. Be aware that any member may send e-mail to this address through the site’s contact form, but the e-mail address you provide will not be exposed unless you or your child answers via e-mail. If your child e-mails a member via the contact form, the e-mail address you provided will be exposed to that person.
  • Birthdate: I don’t display this, but I might use the month/day information for birthday greetings to members.
  • Other required information such as your child’s name can be invented and doesn’t need to reflect reality.
  • Your machine’s IP address is logged at the time you sign up for an account on Anthrofiction Network. The information is never displayed and I typically only look at it if I suspect a problem with spurious accounts, spamming, hacking, etc. I also log this information when members do something on the site such as upload a story or vote for a story.
  • Cookies: See the cookies section on the Privacy Policies page.

The following information is optional.

  • Biography: This information is in free-form, web page format and may contain anything the child wishes to include. You should be aware of what your child posts.
  • Mailing address: If your child should win a contest I will ask for a mailing address. I only store this information in my personal records and never on the website.

I’m working on a mechanism for maintaining COPPA accounts—a single account with dual passwords and e-mail addresses, for parental control. And I’ve been thinking of how to implement content controls for those who wish to limit their reading to something less than PG-13. I hope to add these features soon.
